Supermarkets across the UK continue to unethically stock goods from Israel and illegal Israeli settlements despite the human rights abuses that the state has perpetrated and continues to perpetrate against Palestinian civilians.
A week of action against supermarkets stocking Israeli produce is being organised nationally by Friends of Al-Aqsa and a number of solidarity organisations. The campaign calls on all consumers to stop buying Israeli goods until the Israeli regime affords the Palestinians with the human rights that they are guaranteed under international law, and lifts the siege on Gaza which has resulted in immeasurable suffering.
Goods from Illegal Israeli Settlements
Israeli settlements are illegal under international law. They have been built on land stolen from Palestinian families. The goods that these settlements produce should not be sold in the UK. Produce in supermarkets labelled as ‘Produce of the West Bank’ originate in illegal settlements, and should be boycotted. This misleading labelling leads many consumers to think they are from Palestine, but they are not as Palestinians face immense hardships exporting produce to Europe.
TAKE ACTION!
From 7th – 15th November, we encourage everyone to target Israeli products for boycott in their local supermarkets.
Waitrose, Morrisons, Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury’s - These are the major supermarkets in the UK. Waitrose and Morrisons in particular have so far refused to discuss the question of goods from illegal Israeli settlements. The week of action will force them to reconsider this position.
You can participate in the boycott in a number of ways:-
- Go to stores and if you find goods from Israel or illegal settlements, demand to speak to the manager. Tell them your concerns about Israeli goods being stocked and refer to Israel’s human rights record. - See our leaflets for further information (especially 'Denying Water', 'Israeli Apartheid Policies' & 'Children of Palestine' ).
- Write to, email and call their headquarters to make complaints. Focus on calling the headquarters on Wednesday 11th November - We NEED to inundate them with calls. Focus particularly on Waitrose & Morrisons for this day.
- Organise a demonstration outside your local branch of the store if they fail to listen to your concerns. You can also set up a stall or hand out leaflets about Israel and the need to boycott. These can be ordered for free from Friends of Al-Aqsa. Email us at: boycott@aqsa.org.uk with details of how many leaflets you need, your address and contact number.
- Contact your local media during the week in order to publicise the campaign and get some coverage which will encourage others’ to also participate.
