Opposition to Zionism within Judaism/ lecture by Eyal Sivan
Opposition to Zionism within Judaism
Speaker: Eyal Sivan
Chair: Dr Laleh Khalili
This lecture will look at the different Jewish voices that since the late 19th century rose against the Zionist movement and its ideas. It can be argued that Zionism can be defined as the support for the idea of a Jewish state or any political structure that will guaranty a Jewish majority on historical Palestine or parts of it. The critique, opposition and even total rejection of Zionism and its various tendencies expressed from within mainstream Judaism, by Jewish figures, organisations and movements, is as old as Zionism itself. While Zionism gained its strength and support mainly from non-Jews and Christian movements and states, Jewish critics opposed Zionism and constrained its expansion among Jewish communities. Following the genocide of the European Jewry during World War II, Zionism gained popularity and Jewish opposition to Zionism seemed to disappear. After the creation of the state of Israel, Jewish opposition to Zionism found new expressions. In the light of the ongoing radical critique of Israel’s policy expressed by Jewish individuals, institutions and Israeli Jews, which is sometimes wrongly perceived as a form of Jewish opposition to Zionism, and the growing political attempt to amalgamate anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism, this lecture will trace the intellectual history and expose the grand lines of what can be defined as ‘Jewish opposition to Zionism’ and its actuality
